1. What is HKCGI?
- The Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute 香港公司治理公會 (HKCGI), formerly known as The Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS), is the only qualifier of the internationally recognised Chartered Secretary and Chartered Governance Professional qualification in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
- With a history of 75 years, HKCGI has over 10,000 members, graduates and students with significant representations within listed companies and other cross-industry governance functions.
- HKCGI represents and advocates on behalf of the industry in addressing governance concerns at governmental and regulatory levels.
2. What is HKCGI Sustainability Governance Academy?
- Launched on 31 July 2024 alongside a seminar on HKEX’s new climate disclosure requirements.
- HKCGI launched an ESG Reporting Certification Course in February 2023. Over 1,400 people have participated in the Course up to June 2024.
- All Certification Holders of the ESG Reporting Certification Course are eligible to register as Sustainability Professionals under the Academy free of charge.
- The Academy is the first of its kind in Hong Kong that takes a holistic approach to sustainability, going beyond environmental and climate to help businesses and organisations oversee societal and governance elements that impact sustainable growth and profitability.
3. Why is this Academy needed, and aren’t there already a number of similar groups?

4. Who operates the Academy?
- The Academy is operated under HKCGI.
- The Advisory Board to the Academy includes: David Simmonds, Edith Shih, Gillian Meller, Ernest Lee, Teresa Ko, and Pru Bennett. They are all renowned figures in ESG, sustainability, and governance with a wealth of practical experience in this field.
5. Who is the Academy for?
- All Certification Holders of the ESG Reporting Certification Course are eligible to register as Sustainability Professionals under the Academy free of charge.
- Members could include: Chartered Secretaries, Legal, Compliance, Finance, HR; Chartered Governance Professionals including Sustainability and DEI executives; Students & young professionals taking career/leadership development courses; Professionals serious about governance accreditation & education including climate journalists and PR practitioners.
